Glasto on a Budget

June 10, 2015 01:00

Here, Julie Bowen looks at doing Glasto on a budget. Julie says;

Going to the Glastonbury Festival isn't cheap these days. We've looked at how much you'll need to save up so you can focus on having a great time instead of worrying about money.

Glastonbury festival

The lowdown

The Glastonbury Festival has been going for more than 40 years and is easily the biggest and most famous festival in the UK, with more than 100 stages showcasing the best music and performing arts.

Where? Worthy Farm, just outside the Somerset village of Pilton.

When? The weekend after the summer solstice at the end of June. In 2014 it will take place from Wednesday 25 to Sunday 29 June.

Capacity: 175,000 tickets, plus thousands more volunteers and artists

Pro tip: Most festivals keep their arena and campsites separate, meaning you can only buy alcohol from their bars when you're in the arena. At Glastonbury you can carry your own drink and food wherever you like, as long as it's for personal consumption.

If you want to cut costs, bring your own food. However, there are hundreds of delicious food outlets onsite, so try to sample these if you can.

How much does Glastonbury cost?

The cost depends on what you want from your Glastonbury experience and how much you're willing to spend. Our calculation is based on striking a balance between cutting costs and spending a little to sample some of the festival's delights.

We've also assumed you'll travel from London up on the Wednesday morning when gates open and return on the following Monday. Here's a breakdown of how much you'll need to save up.

Ticket

£222 including booking fees and delivery.

Transport

£48.40 for a return coach from London Victoria.

Food and drinks onsite

Assuming you bring your own breakfast, fruit and snacks, you will probably still need two decent meals per day (you'll walk a long way each day, so you'll need it!). If you go for a pasty or hot dog at lunchtime, you'll pay about £6 each; something more substantial like a curry with all the trimmings for dinner from the Thali Café will be about £10. Over the five days, that's £80 on food.

If you like a drink, expect to pay London pub prices at most of the bars. If you've taken your own drinks along and only buy a cold pint of Brothers and a hot and spicy drink from the cider bus each evening, that'll be about £8.50 a day, so £42.50 over the 5 days.

Bring your own food and drink

Two packs of cereal bars: £3
A bag of apples: £1.75
Carton of orange juice: £1
Large bag of mixed nuts: £2
Biscuits: £1
Crate of beer: £18
Cost of groceries: £26.75

Buying a souvenir T-shirt

You should be able to pick up a band T-shirt for about £20 from one of the official stalls. You might find them cheaper from unofficial sellers, but don't be surprised if it falls apart in the wash!

Total cost

In total you'll need about £439.65.

This might sound like a lot but it's cheaper than watching more than three or four of the bands at their own shows would be.

If you're happy to spend more, there are plenty of extra luxuries to consider, such as buying all your food and drink there (it's pricey, but means less to carry!) or picking up the latest luxury camping kit. Alternatively you could stay in Worthy View, which includes pre-built tents, tipis and yurts as well as hot showers and better toilets.
